Gingham skirt

Hello!
Recently
I bought myself really cheap cotton in a gingham pattern, because I
decided to make myself an adjustable skirt for every day use, and even
when I wanna feel pretty at home. I wanna get used to longer skirts again. In 2021 I remember wearing one of my plain brown maxi skirts everyday to school. I don't even know what fabric it was, I need to dig up my room to find it... It was made... Not in a best way, but wow. I managed to wear it for a long time. It was not that pretty though, but it truly was my favourite!
But it's time for a new era. Every autumn I manage to make myself a "me skirt" to wear when I have nothing else or feel lazy. It's not autumn... But let's see....
Pattern is just some rectangles. Literally. You can take a look into my plan, but look at it with a grain of salt. The maths was correct only with the front part.
I
knew I wanted a skirt with
a tying bow as an adjustment (so it's not as restricting after I eat
like the one with a zipper) and I ended up getting the idea from
YouTube - Ash L G’s channel. Look it up if You wanna do the same skirt, I
didn’t follow the instructions, I just needed the idea. I loved the
skirt with big ties so I took that one particular idea.
At
first, I thought I would add an elastic on the first layer of the skirt
instead of ties, but I found it really difficult to get into and adjust,
so I gave up on the idea and went with the original one.

The
waistband is wide - looks good on my long torso and
the fabric ties (that are part of the waistband) are even wider for
about 2 cm. I feel like I look way better with wide waistbands. Also... I kind of don't like waistbands at all. So it's wide or none. I am weird, yes. The ties are something between 150cm to 200 cm long... I might have gotten crazy. I might have not.
I love big ties! I love how long they can get !!! We all love big bows, don’t we? Or is it the girly need inside of me? I might be insane. Help.
It was supposed
to be a shorter skirt - about 90 cm maximum (feels funny putting shorter skirt and 90 cm besides), but I ended up making it
94 cm long (starting from the bottom of the waistband) and I spent good
hour with my mum trying to cut the hem evenly, because it was kind of
playing games with me as always. She's my best assistant, when I move out I feel like I would need a boyfriend or friend specialy for this type of work. One call and my assistant would have to be here, because I had a mental breakdown over a skirt.
It’s been a while since I wore some
maxi skirts! If I end up not enjoying it, I might just make some tucks... But I don't think tucks fit here,
The knife pleats are 4 cm wide, I think this is my favourite type of pleating - It’s clean and not as puffy. I feel like skirts with a "standard" waistbands with "standardly" gathered rectangles are unflattering... I usually tend to avoid making skirts made from rectangles, because I hate how usually they make me look like a bell when I swirl, but screw it.
And yes. I mentioned having a breakdown over a skirt. I had to redo the whole waistband at some point. It was 22:30 and I was tired. Let the girl sleep.
Overall - I am really happy with the result! I spent maybe one day or more making it, as it’s really just a few rectangles.
This
is also a great method for a easy to wear and comfortable skirt, I
surely will give it another try in future with new skirts.
I wish to have a viscose skirt like that... In some plain colour. Maybe I will do that in the summer, but I don't know if I wan't to keep the long lenght or make it shorter. Eh, will think about it later.
The fabric costed me a little bit less than 7€. Yes It was supposed to be a cheap project... And it was. Fast and easy... And it looks really clean, people compliemented this skirt a lot today...
